Charlie was having a rough week.
It started with having to go on a business trip, which meant leaving Alex. Going away and leaving his beautiful  boyfriend. His amazing hazel eyes, his crazy hair, Charlie couldn't stop thinking about him. It hadn't been an easy relationship, Alex wasn't ways the most faithful. But he had settled down! After a crazy tear-jerking year, Alex had finally promised to Charlie he would be his and only his. No one else in the picture anymore. And it had been great since then. They had been happy for two months now. It was beautiful.
Charlie didn't want to have to interrupt their wonderful relationship to leave. But if he wanted to keep his cushy job he had to go. So Charlie left with a tearful goodbye and the knowledge that he would be home in two weeks.
But that had changed.
Charlie was lucky, he got to come home a whole week early. He got to see Alex again! Charlie was literally bursting with excitement. The cab pulled up at his house and he jumped out. He payed the driver, snatched his bags, and sprinted up to the house.
In movies, whenever something bad is about to happen, creepy music starts to play. The world gets a little darker, and you just know that life for that character will never be the same again.
In real life, that just doesn't happen. On this particular day, the sun was shining. Birds were chirping and soaring through the air, flowers stretched higher as the continued their constant struggle to reach the skies, and there was a gentle breeze to top off the perfect day. The world was just at peace, and it seemed like nothing could go wrong. Sometimes, the world is just wrong.
Charlie opened the door to find something he had seen countless times before, but thought he would never see again.
Alex was on the couch. Naked. And he wasn't alone.
On top of Alex was some other random girl, just as naked as Alex himself.
Charlie couldn't believe it.
"Y-you promised," Charlie felt the tears slipping out of his eyes. Dropping down onto the floor, carrying with them his hopes of a wonderful future with Alex.
"Charlie...you're not supposed to be here..." At this point both Alex and the girl had looked up and grabbed a blanket to cover themselves. The girl looked around and looked at the ground.
"Um...I'm sorry...but...who are you?" she mumbled.
"Who AM I?" Charlie said, his voice rising. "A better question is who the FUCK are you! I'm Alex's BOYFRIEND! The one he promised to never cheat on again! So I want you to take your slutty self and get the HELL out of MY house!" Charlie screamed, he was fuming. You could almost see the smoke coming out of his ears. Alex's face was as red as a tomato, and the girl's was an impossible darker shade than Alex's. She was smart, and quickly pulling on her clothes the random girl ran out of the boys' house, mumbling "Bye Alex," as she left.
Alex stood up, pulling on his clothes.
"Charlie I-"
"You treated me like crap. But you promised that you were better. You were finally mine. Why Alex? Why did you do this?"
"You deserved it!...No that's not right. You accepted it. You were so easy to own. So desperate to be loved."
"Nobody would love you!" Charlie shouted in defense.
"But they did!
"They didn't want you, they wanted what you were selling!"
"But it was me selling it!"
"I think you are the pathetic one. I pity you."
"You have always wanted to be me."
"And now I'm better than you." This statement stopped the conservation.
"Real modest Charlie." Alex said after a long pause.
"It's true, and you know it." This dropped the conversation yet again. This time, Charlie broke the silence.
"You said they."
"What are you talking about?"
"Before. I said 'nobody would love you' and you said 'but they did'."
"Yes, and?"
"Well, first, if you're saying 'they' that means there were so many people. But it also means that I'm just part of 'them'." Charlie said with tears in his eyes. "I'm not important."
"That's not true! Charlie, you mean so much to me. Do you remember the time that-"
"Stop fighting!" Charlie snapped. "You're one of those people. You're really good at fighting back. And you can't admit you're wrong. So when someone points out something that annoys them, you just fight them. And you're good, so you win, and you're just never wrong. Well no more, I'm saying it right here right now. You cannot be in a relationship with anyone. You're not trustworthy, you're not caring, you don't LOVE. You just use people. There's a difference between 'love' and 'lust.' They're not interchangeable words. You didn't figure that out. And now you're alone." Charlie ended with harsh words. But Alex, after everything, countered that statement.
"I'm not alone, I have you."
"Not anymore. Goodbye Alex."
"Wait Charlie don't go!" But Charlie was done with responding to Alex.
The next hour consisted of Charlie packing his bags and ignoring Alex hovering over him apologizing.
"Please stop! Oh Charlie come on, I can change. I just need time. Don't do this!" But Charlie didn't stop. He packed everything he needed, and he just walked out the front door.
"Come on, where are you gonna go? Please just think for a minute Charlie." Charlie stopped and turned around to face Alex.
"It doesn't matter where I am, as long as I'm away from you," Charlie stated turning on his heel and marching to the car. Alex ran up next to him, grabbed his shoulders, and pulled him in for a kiss. A long passionate kiss, that even Charlie got lost in. After what seemed like no time at all, Alex pulled away and spoke to Charlie softly.
"See? You don't want to destroy the spark I know you felt."
Charlie turned away, about to walk off. But he thought about that for a minute before turning around and slapping Alex across the face. He got in the car and drove away, watching Alex get smaller and smaller until he was gone.
Sometimes, movies get it right. But other times, they just get it wrong. There isn't always just a happy or sad ending. Sometimes it's a just a mush of emotions. Too hard to make a decision about anything.
Charlie saw the sign in front of the train tracks. It said that the train was coming. It said stop. And he did stop, right on the tracks.
Charlie looked down at the peddles. One sent him flying forward away from danger, the other would keep him in place. He jammed his foot out at the last second, the bright lights only feet away, and made his choice.
I'm sorry. I just couldn't end it. So you can make your own decision about the end! Yay.
I actually hate when authors do that. Like in The Giver, the end bothered me so much! So ya, I'm apologizing before anyone but me has read the story. Isn't that a weird thought? That no one but you has read it until you let everyone else see it. It's such a weird thing that we do. We put words on paper, and then we show them to other people for enjoyment.
Sorry I'm ranting.
This is for RiverSongRegenerated's contest. The dialogue is somewhere in the middle and it's pretty much word for word. This was really fun to work on. I had a good time trying to wrap my head around what the conservation meant to me and how I could interpret that to make it interesting. So yay. Happiness.
Comment and Enjoy.

This is fantastic! It's beautifully written and reduced me to tears, as well as shouting at Alex from my computer. In my mind Charlei is dead but I think it would also have been good for Charlie to either drive on or reverse.
